BILL NUMBER:A10022

Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the issuance of distinctive plates for veterans of the armed forces of the United States

Purpose or general idea of bill

To create distinctive license plates for the branches of the United States military and related bodies.

Summary of specific provisions

Section one adds a new section 404-x to the vehicle and traffic law to allow veterans of the army, navy, air force, marine corps, coast guard or merchant marines to be issued a distinctive license plate upon request. Section two provides that such distinctive plates shall only be issued upon proof that the applicant is a veteran or the spouse of such veteran. Section three authorizes such plates to be issued in the same manner as other number plates upon the payment of the regular registration fee, provided that a one time addi- tional service charge of ten dollars shall be charged for such plate. Section four provides that no special number plates shall be issued under this section unless the commissioner is satisfied that the aggre- gate amount of annual service charges issued under section 3 is suffi- cient to cover the costs associated with the design and manufacture of such special plates.

Justification

Many New Yorkers serve in the U.S. army, navy, air force, marine corps, coast guard and merchant marines. This bill will allow for the creation of license plates bearing the words "United States Army Veteran," "United States Army Veteran," "United States Navy Veteran," etc. Creating these distinctive plates will honor all our veterans who have sacrificed to protect our nation.
