BILL NUMBER:A10368
Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to reporting instances of governmental fraud and waste
Purpose or general idea of bill
To publicize the existence of the toll- free telephone line in the Office of the Inspector General for the reporting of governmental fraud and waste.
Summary of specific provisions
Amends the Executive Law by adding a new section 6-a.
Effects of present law which this bill would alter
Currently, this toll-free telephone line is in place, however, very few people know of its existence. This bill requires the Office of the Inspector General to develop a plan to publicize this telephone line by postings in state offices and other public buildings and through public service announce- ments in the broadcast media. In addition, the plan shall include the placement of this number on forms which are customarily distributed by the state, its departments, agencies and public authorities to members of the public.
Justification
With New York State's current fiscal climate, government must be as efficient as possible. While the overwhelming majority of this money is well spent and used properly, if one percent of the state budget is lost through fraud or waste, $6 million of state taxpayers' money is lost. Currently this phone number is listed in the blue pages, but very few people are aware of it. This bill will require the Office of the Inspector General to develop a plan to advertise this phone line through various methods of advertising.
