BILL NUMBER:A10380
Title of bill
An act to amend the highway law, in relation to desig- nating a portion of the state highway system in the town of Ellicott as the "Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Memorial Bridge"
Purpose or general idea of bill
This would recognize the historic significance of Lucille Ball and Dezi Arnaz to the Jamestown area by naming the bridge on the Interstate 86 which crosses over North Main Street in the Town of Ellicot as the "Lucille Ball-Dezi Arnaz Memorial Bridge."
Summary of specific provisions
Section 1: Adds a new subdivision (kk) to Section 342 of the highway law designating a portion of interstate route eighty-six as the "Lucille Ball-Dezi Arnaz Memorial Bridge."
Section 2: Provides that the Commissioner of the Department of Transpor- tation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signage reflecting the ceremonial designation of this bridge as the "Lucille Ball-Dezi Arnaz Memorial Bridge."
Justification
Next year marks the centenary of the birth of Lucille ball, best known as the star of the television show "1 Love Lucy," in Jamestown, New York, in I911. In light of this occasion and in recogni- tion of the enormous popularity and influence she enjoyed throughout her long career, naming this bridge near Jamestown in honor of her, and "I Love Lucy" co-star Dezi Arnaz, will distinguish this area as having held a significant role in her life, while helping to promote the area as a popular tourist destination.
