BILL NUMBER:A10406

Title of bill

An act to amend Part B of chapter 58 of the laws of 2005 relating to the Health Care Reform Act of 1996 and the public health law relating to extending certain provisions relating thereto, in relation to extending the transitional care unit demonstration program

Purpose or general idea of bill

The purpose of the bill is to extend a hospital's authorization to operate a transitional care unit (TCU).

Summary of specific provisions

The bill amends Chapter 58 of the Laws of 2005, to extend for 5 years the provision that authorizes hospitals to operate transitional care units.

Justification

Transitional care units (TCUs) provide sub-acute care services to inpatients of a general hospital, who no longer require acute care inpatient services, but who continue to need specialized medical, nursing and other hospital ancillary services and are not yet ready for discharge. TCUs are limited in length of stay and designed to meet and resolve patients' specific sub-acute medical care needs. This legislation would extend for 5 years the provision that authorizes general hospitals to operate TCUs.
