BILL NUMBER:A11085

Title of bill

An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to increasing the maximum amount that may be paid to volunteer fire officers and firefighters appearing before a court or other tribunal

Purpose or general idea of bill

Increases from $100 to $200, the maximum amount that may be paid to volunteer fire officers and fire fighters appearing before a court or other tribunal.

Summary of specific provisions

Changes the maximum amount a volunteer firefighter may be compensated for lost wages incurred while appearing before a court or other tribunal from $100 to $200.

Justification

As it currently stands, volunteer fire officers and firefighters are entitled to he reimbursed for expenses incurred while appearing before a court or other tribunal. They may also be reimbursed for actual lost wages incurred at this time. The maximum amount of reimbursement for lost wages is $100 and has not risen since this law was chaptered over two decades ago. By raising this amount to $200, we are ensuring that our volunteer fire officers and firefighters may be justly and appropriately compensated for wages lost while fulfilling such obligations to their volunteer fire department.
