BILL NUMBER:A11136

Title of bill

An act to amend the town law, in relation to volunteer members of the Armor Fire Company

Purpose or general idea of bill

To allow for the Armor Volunteer Fire Company to be exempt from the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of the company's membership be of non-resident members.

Summary of specific provisions

Section one of the bill adds the Armor Volunteer Fire Company of Erie County as a fire company that is exempt from the requirement that no more than forty-five percent of its member- ship consist of non-resident members.

Justification

In this economic climate it is very difficult for some volunteer fire companies to recruit new members to replace those who may move out of the district. Armor Volunteer Fire Company has had recent troubles sustaining adequate enrollment from within the boundaries of their fire district. Also, many volunteer firefighters who do move out of the district are willing to continue their service in heir former district of residence. Armor Volunteer Fire Company has many non-resi- dent members who wish to continue their service, but are not able to because of the residency requirement where no more than forty-five percent of its volunteer firefighters may be non-residents. This requirement is a hardship for the company with regards to staffing and adequate service to the community, meriting an exemption.
