BILL NUMBER:A2971A

Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to extending the school year to two hundred school days exclusive of legal holidays

Purpose or general idea of bill

To increase the school year from 180 days to 200 days.

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1 - - Paragraph a of subdivision 4 of section 3204 of the education law is amended to have the school year in session for not less than two hundred days each year, exclusive of legal holidays. The school year will commence on the last Monday of August.

Justification

This bill would increase the school year to 200 days in order to address the growing need to improve student achievement and academic outcomes in our schools. By increasing the amount of days in the school year, our teachers will be able to expand their lesson plans, giving them increased time to spend with each student and cover more academic materials.

In addition to the educational benefits, this legislation would also allow school districts to incorporate more religious holidays into their school year. With a growing, diverse population of students occupying our classrooms, it is important that we allow students of various reli- gions to observe their holidays without missing school.
