BILL NUMBER:A3367A
Title of bill
An act to amend the election law, in relation to absentee voting for primary care givers
Purpose or general idea of the bill
To allow primary care givers of persons who are suffering from a phys- ical disability or illness to vote by absentee ballot.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of the bill amends paragraph (c) of subdivision 1 of section 8-400 of the election law to allow primary care givers of persons who are suffering from a physical disability or illness to vote by absentee ballot.
Section 2 of the bill amends subparagraph (iii) of paragraph (c) of subdivision 3 of section 8-400 of the election law to modify the absen- tee ballot application to reflect the additional category of persons who may vote by absentee ballot.
Justification
Voting is the most important right that the citizens of a democracy possess. Unfortunately, some people who desire to vote are unable to do so because they cannot appear at their polling site because they are the primary care givers of one or more individuals who are ill or physically disabled. This bill will allow these care givers to apply for an absen- tee ballot so that they can provide the care needed and still exercise their right to vote.
