BILL NUMBER:A4737B
Title of bill
An act to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring agencies conducting street or side- walk construction to post signs at work sites identifying the responsi- ble agency and its contact information
Purpose or general idea of bill
This legislation would provide addi- tional transparency and essential information regarding construction projects in New York City.
Summary of specific provisions
A new section 19-154 would be added to the administrative code of New York City to require agencies and enti- ties conducting street or sidewalk construction to post signs at each construction site state the contact information for the agency or enti- ty, any permit numbers and the estimated start and end dates of the construction.
Subdivision b provides that every sign required under subdivision a be posted prior to the start of construction, remain posted until the completion of construction, be posted conspicuously and specifies the size of print on the sign.
Section 2 of the bill amends the New York City Administrative Code §19-109 to require signs comply with the provisions of §19-154.
Justification
Current law does not require entities conducting sidewalk or street construction projects to post signs to inform the public of the details of the construction. As a result, the public has no effi- cient way to determine the type of construction being conducted, the expected duration of the project, or the name and contact information of the entity responsible for the construction. Residents with questions or concerns about a construction project have no way to determine who to contact to have their questions answered and their concerns addressed.
This legislation will provide the public with basic information regard- ing the nature and duration of construction projects and the name and contact information of the entity responsible for the construction. It is expected that many questions and concerns residents have will be addressed directly from the information provided in the posted construction sips; if additional information is needed, residents will be able to directly contact the responsible entity listed on the signs.
