BILL NUMBER:A7010A

Title of bill

An act to amend the social services law, in relation to certain public assistance payments

Purpose

This Bill directs the commissioner of social services institute a system to track public assistance payments to unrelated public assistance recipients residing in the same residence

Summary of provisions

Section 1- reletters subdivision (i) of the social services law, as relettered by section 1 of part K3 of chapter 57 of the laws of 2007

Section 2- contains the effective date

Justification

This legislation will institute a system to track public assistance payments and to ensure that a landlord renting a single fami- ly dwelling to several unrelated individuals on public assistance shall not collect monthly payments more than twenty percent above the fair market rental value of such single family housing. Many times landlords rent to several unrelated individuals who are receiving public assist- ance therefore the landlord is collecting an excessive amount of rents and making a profit through public assistance dollars. This legislation would prevent landlords from windfall profits from doing business with social services.

Prior legislative history

New legislation.

Fiscal implications

None.

Effective date

This act shall take effect on immediately.
