BILL NUMBER:A7511A
Title of bill
An act to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to the employment of police officers in the town of South- ampton; and to repeal certain provisions of such law relating thereto
Purpose or general idea of bill
This would allow the Town of Southamp- ton the option of allowing a police officer to complete twenty years of service to the Town.
Summary of specific provisions
Subdivision m of section 384-d of the retirement and social security law is repealed, and a new subdivision m is added.
Justification
Police Officers must complete twenty years of service in order to receive full pension benefits. Current law requires police officers employed by the Town of Southampton to retire at 55 years of age, regardless of whether they completed 20 years of service. This-leg- islation would allow the Town the option of continuing an officer's term of employment, in order for an officer to reach the twenty year mark.
