BILL NUMBER:A8368A
Title of bill
An act to amend chapter 924 of the laws of 1941 relating to legalizing acts and proceedings of the town board of the town of Southold, Suffolk county relating to the establishment of the Mattituck park district, in relation to election of park commissioners by residents of such district
Purpose
This bill relates to the election of park commissioners of the Mattituck park district.
Summary of provisions
Section 1- Section 1 of chapter 924 of the laws of 1941 relating to legalizing acts and proceedings of the town board of the town of Southold, Suffolk county relating to the establishment of the Mattituck park district.
Section 2- Sections 3, 4 and 6 of chapter 924 of the laws of 1941 relating to legalizing acts and proceedings of the town board of the town of Southold, Suffolk county relating to the establishment of the Mattituck park district, as amended by sections 210, 211 and 212 of part 4 of chapter 710 of the laws of 1943.
Section 3- Contains Effective Date.
Justification
This bill would amend the law so that more than one woman can run and/or serve as park commissioner. This law is blatantly discriminatory against women and the bill would amend this clause so that any person, regardless of their sex, will be allowed to run for this position.
It would also allow all resident taxpayers, regardless of property ownership, the right to vote. Property ownership should not be criteria for voting rights. Many people in the area rent their homes or may be resident tax payers lacking ownership due to marriage.
Prior legislative history
New legislation.
Fiscal implications
None.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately.
