BILL NUMBER:A8491A

Title of bill

An act to amend the election law, in relation to creat- ing a special primary election

Purpose or general idea of the bill

Sets out the procedures and requirements for special primary elections.

Summary of specific provisions

Amends Section §6-114 of the election law to mandate a special primary election similar to ones held in the New York City municipality.

Justification

The current procedure for choosing a special election nominee excludes the will of the people by permitting parties to inde- pendently nominate candidates. This act will permit individuals to vote in a special primary election for a special election candidate, such that the candidate receiving the most votes in the special primary will become the nominee of the party.
