BILL NUMBER:A8639
Title of bill
An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to the task force on the slaughter of non-ambulatory animals; and to amend chapter 164 of the laws of 2008 amending the agriculture and markets law relating to establishing a task force on preventing the slaughter for food of non-ambulatory animals in New York state, in relation to the effectiveness thereof
Purpose
To extend and provide technical amendments to Chapter 164 of 2008.
Summary of provisions
Amends section 96-n Agriculture and Markets Law, as added by Chapter 164 of 2008, to clarify that taskforce appointees shall be appointed by the Governor upon the recommendation by Leader- ship, to clarify the scope of the taskforce's responsibilities, and to extend the provisions of the section until January 15, 2011.
Justification
Approval Memo #12 outlined concerns regarding the appointment mechanism of the taskforce members and the scope of the taskforce's responsibilities in light to the State's limited oversight of slaughterhouses. This bill addresses the concerns raised in the memo and extends the provisions of the section.
