BILL NUMBER:A8674
Title of bill
An act to authorize the Long Island Youth Mentoring, Inc. to file an application for a real property tax exemption
Purpose
To exempt Long Island Youth Mentoring, Inc. from liability for payment of certain real property taxes for the 2008-2009 assessment rolls for the parcel it owns in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York.
Summary of provisions
This bill would authorize the assessor of the Town of Islip to accept an application for exemptions from real property taxes pursuant to §420-a of the Real Property Tax Law for the 2008-2009 assessment rolls. If satisfied that Long Island Youth Mentoring, Inc. would otherwise have been entitled to said exemptions, the assessor is authorized to grant same, and cancel all remaining unpaid taxes, interest, related fines and penalties.
Existing law
None.
Justification
In December, 2007, the Long Island Youth Mentoring, Inc., a not for profit organization, purchased from a local church the property known as 153 McNair Street, Brentwood, New York. It was the understanding of Long Island Youth Mentoring, Inc. that the property would remain exempt from real property taxes after the purchase occurred because of the Church's tax exempt status but the sale triggered a release of the exemption and a tax bill of approximately $10,000 is now due. It is intended by this bill to undo the hardship that will be suffered if the organization is required to pay the property taxes due as aforementioned. The money would be better used to serve the community directly.
