BILL NUMBER:A8837

Title of bill

An act to amend the uniform city court act, in relation to providing for the election of an additional full-time city court judge in the city of Yonkers

Purpose

Authorizes the city of Yonkers to have 7 city court judges.

Summary of provisions

Amends Paragraph 61 of subdivision (d) of section 2104 of the uniform city court act, as amended by chapter 493 of the laws of2006.

Justification

The Yonkers City Court calendar has become overburdened. The Court handles everything from the most serious unindicted criminal felonies to less serious misdemeanor criminal cases and a very busy traffic calendar to landlord-tenant and civil cases. With a population of roughly 200,000, Yonkers is the largest city in Westchester County and the fourth largest city in the State of New York. The need for a seventh judge is evident and has been recently recommended by the New York State Unified Court System.
