BILL NUMBER:A8887
Title of bill
An act to amend the economic development law, in relation to requiring a qualified, independent entity to prepare a report on the tourism and economic impact of professional football home day and night games played both in western New York and in neighboring regions
Purpose or general idea of the bill
The purpose of this bill is to have a study commissioned on the tourism and economic impact of professional home football games on the economy of western New York and identify the loss of economic activity and revenue on games held outside New York.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of this bill would create a new § 167 of the economic development law and calls for the department to commis- sion an independent entity to study the tourism and economic impact of professional football on western New York and sets forth criteria and topics that should be addressed in the report.
Justification
This bill would examine, in an independent study, the effect of day and night games, on the tourism industry and the economic impact that National Football League Buffalo Bills games have on western New York that are held in Buffalo and the loss of economic activity and revenue when a singular event, such as a weekday night game, is held outside of the western New York area. The Buffalo Bills have begun play- ing one night game in the Toronto area, a spectacular of international focus, and the state should look into the effect that has on any number of industries that depend on the home games traditionally played in the Buffalo area and the forgone State revenues.
