BILL NUMBER:A8984A
Title of bill
An act to amend the general municipal law and the town law, in relation to exempting fire departments from consolidation or dissolution
Purpose
To exclude fire districts from being either consolidated or dissolved.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 defines "local government entity" but states that a "local government entity" shall not fire districts created by counties under county law.
Section 2 states that if two or more fire districts are consolidated then the commissioner of each district shall form a board of fire commissioners and the treasure of each district shall serve jointly. Also, this section says that the terms of office for the consolidated districts for fire commissioners shall terminate on the thirty-first day of December next succeeding such election
Justification
Fire departments are vital services throughout the state. Both serve citizens of all social-economic backgrounds. Volunteer fire- fighters are not paid therefore they are more cost effective than paid firefighters.
Legislative history
New bill.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:. None since they are already in place.
