BILL NUMBER:A9000A

Title of bill

An act to amend the labor law, in relation to requiring employers to provide safety ropes and system components to firefighters; and to repeal paragraph e of subdivision 1 of section 27-a of the labor law relating to the definition of system components

Purpose

This bill exempts volunteer fire districts from requiring safe- ty ropes and system components for use by firefighters and from the training in the use of such ropes.

Summary of provisions

Section 1- Subdivision 4 of section 27-a of the labor law is amended by adding a new paragraph.

Section 2- Contains Effective Date.

Justification

This bill would exempt small fire companies from having safety rope and system components. These small fire companies receive no funding from the state and can't afford these required safety ropes. Some companies feel as if they have better products than the ropes and being required to have them is a waste of limited money that could be put to better use. These small fire companies also bring up the point that these ropes do not fit all the different situations that they face. The law should be more flexible to account for the conditions in small fire districts.

Prior legislative history

New legislation.

Fiscal implications

None.

Effective date

This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after it shall have become a law.
