BILL NUMBER:A9199

Title of bill

An act to amend the public health law, in relation to increasing the minimum age of persons permitted to use tanning facili- ties

Purpose of the bill

This bill intends to protect young teenagers from using tanning facilities until they have reached the age of 16.

Summary of provisions

This bill amends subdivisions 2, 3, 4 of section 3555 of the public health law by changing the minimum age for use of tanning facilities from fourteen to sixteen.

Justification

There is a growing concern over the safety of tanning beds and the dangerous effects it has on young persons. The recent reports show that a person who begins tanning before the age of thirty raises their risks for skin cancer by 75%. This bill will protect teen- agers under the vulnerable age of 16 from engaging in this dangerous activity.
