BILL NUMBER:A9366

Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to providing that sex offenders shall be ineligible to serve on school boards

Purpose or general idea of bill

Relates to providing that registered sex offenders shall be ineligible to serve on school boards..

Summary of specific provisions

An act to amend the education law is amended by adding a subdivision 5 to read as follows: 5. No person who has been convicted of any offense under article one hundred thirty or two hundred sixty-three of the penal law shall be eligible for appoint- ment or election to the office of trustee or member of a school board of education.

Justification

There are rules already in place to protect our children from sex offenders and we should not undermine them by allowing those convicted as sex offenders to serve on School Boards. Allowing sex offenders to serve on School Boards puts our children in immediate danger by giving sex predators access to our children through their position on the Board. Convicted sex offenders can not be teachers, principals, administrators, or hold any position at a school, so this legislation would be the extra step needed to ensure our children's safety.
