BILL NUMBER:A9370
Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to estab- lishing a tuition assistance program for volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical service personnel
Purpose or general idea of bill
To provide tuition reimbursement to qualifying volunteer firefighter and emergency medical service person- nel.
Summary of specific provisions
This legislation establishes a tuition assistance program for volunteer firefighters and volunteer emergency medical service personnel who attend a New York State institution of higher learning. Volunteer firefighter and emergency medical service personnel shall be entitled to reimbursement from the state for 100% of the actual cost of the tuition paid by volunteer firefighter or emergen- cy medical service personnel.
JUSTIFICATION:To continue to provide communities with necessary volun- teer personnel to meet emergency needs, incentives must be provided. It is important that aggressive recruitment steps be taken to entice new members to participate in the public safety efforts of volunteer fire departments and ambulance crews. Communities rely heavily on the efforts of the women and men who volunteer their services in this regard. This legislation will provide such incentive and allow volunteers to serve their communities and pursue their education at a New York State insti- tution of higher learning, being fully reimbursed by the state.
