BILL NUMBER:A9744
Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to increasing the annuity of blind veterans or spouses of deceased blind veterans
Purpose
To increase a blind veteran or spouse of a deceased blind veteran's annuity.
Summary of provisions
Amends section 362 of the executive law to increase the Blind Veterans Annuity to one thousand five hundred dollars annually.
Existing law
Blind veterans or the spouses of a deceased blind veteran are entitled to $1000 annually.
Justification
The Blind Veterans Annuity has been in existence since 1913. The annual annuity of $500 (or $41.67 per month) existed until 2000. Currently, the $1,000 annuity equates to $83.33 per month for approximately 3,000 veterans and surviving spouses. An increase in the Annuity will take into account the recent changes in the economy, and specifically the increase in the cost of living for our veterans who have served their country.
Legislative history
2003-04: S.4494 - Referred to Veterans Homeland Security and Military Affairs.
Fiscal implications
The increase in the Blind Veterans Annuity to $1,500 annually is to be determined.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately.
