Title of bill
An act to amend the public authorities law, in relation to the member positions of the Niagara Frontier transportation authority
Purpose
Provides the City of Buffalo representation on the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Board by appointments from the Mayor of Buffalo and the Buffalo common Council.
Summary of provisions
Amends Section 1299-c of the public authorities law by providing for two seats on the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Board upon written recommendation of the Mayor of Buffalo and the other seat upon the written recommendation of the Buffalo Common council. The term for the newly appointed members ending June thirtieth, two thousand sixteen.
Existing law
New bill.
Justification
Since the inception of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) the Board of Directors has consisted of a chairman and ten members with one of the members being appointed by the Erie County Executive and one by the Erie County Legislature, while the city of Buffalo has had none. The residents of the City of Buffalo make up one of the largest if not the largest customer base for the NFTA and should be represented on this board. As we move forward and the NFTA is committed to developing Buffalo's waterfront now, more than ever, it is appropriate to add two members to the Board, one appointed by the Mayor of Buffalo and one member appointed by the City of Buffalo Common council who will represent the city of Buffalo residents and their interests.
