Title of bill
An act to amend the civil service law, in relation to extra credit for certain veterans on competitive examinations
Purpose or general idea of bill
The purpose of this bill is to authorize veterans who have served in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom after March 20,2003 to receive extra credit on competitive examinations.
Summary of provisions
This bill incorporates §85-c into the New York State Civil Service Law. This section will require that additional points for competitive examination would be given to any veterans who have served in an area designated as combat zone by the president of the United States during Operation Iraqi Freedom. after March 20, 2003.
Justification
Under New York State Civil Service Law additional credit on competitive examinations has been granted for veterans who have served in previous wars that the United States has been involved in. For the soldiers who have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom we should established into law that they receive the same advantages as other veterans. Many of our soldiers come back from war without anything to look forward to. These soldiers give up their jobs and their lives to go fight for our country and when they come back they are left jobless. The least that we can do for our veterans, who have put their lives at risk for a better future for the United States, is give them a hand up to finding a way to support themselves when they come home one way to do this is by granting them additional points on competitive examinations.
