Title of bill
An act to amend the military law, in relation to providing that Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans receive tuition free education at schools of the state university of New York or the city university of New York
Purpose
To provide free SUNY or CUNY tuition to Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 -- Adds a new Article V to the Military Law to provide free SUNY or CUNY tuition to Afghanistan and Iraq war veterans. Those taking advantage of this opportunity must be residents of New York State and meet the other requirements laid out in this Article.
Section 2 -- Effective date.
Justification
Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom put their lives on the line to defend their countrymen. Many of these brave men and women are leaving military service and looking for new business and educational opportunities. This legislation seeks to recognize their service to the United States and the State of New York by granting veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars free tuition to SUNY or CUNY.
These men and women have sacrificed greatly for this nation, and providing them with free tuition to SUNY and CUNY is a small way that we can honor their service.
