Title of bill

An act making an appropriation to effectuate the installation of energy conservation measures in certain multifamily dwelling units

Purpose or general idea of bill

This bill would appropriate $5 million to the New York City Housing Authority for the purpose of installing energy saving devices in State-Aided public housing projects. This funding can be used for the installation of new furnaces and boiler systems, the replacement of deteriorated energy inefficient windows and other energy saving measures.

Justification

The New York City Housing Authority owns and operates 18 State-Aided public housing projects consisting of over 110 buildings containing thousands of apartments. Many of the buildings are over 20 years old and are in need of funds to replace energy inefficient windows, boiler plants and heating systems. Passage of this legislation would allow for much needed energy conservation measures, and improve tenant safety and comfort. It would also allow NYCHA to lower its operating costs while modernizing and upgrading its State-Aided projects.
