Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to requiring internet accessibility to videos and photographs of certain unsolved robberies
Purpose
To create, on the web site of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, a listing of all the video and/or photographs, when it is available, from every unsolved armed robbery in New York State.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of the bill states that the home page of the Division of Criminal Justice Services must include video and/or photographs, when available, from every unsolved armed robbery occurring in New York State.
Section 2 -- Effective Date.
Justification
When solving violent crimes, law enforcement's best resource is often average citizens. The success and the popularity of the long-running television show "America's Most Wanted" proves that when regular people and law enforcement work together, dangerous criminals can be brought to justice.
Not long ago, a local law enforcement agency in Kentucky created a web site containing video and/or photographs from every unsolved armed robbery that occurred in the jurisdiction. This bill seeks to establish something similar for New York State.
Listing all the available video and/or photographs from New York State's unsolved armed robberies on a single web site will make it easier for the citizens of this state to help law enforcement bring these very dangerous criminals to justice.
