Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law, in relation to designation of August seventh as "Family Day", a day of commemoration

Purpose

To designate August 7th as "Family Day" in New York, in order to draw attention to and therefore emphasize the importance of the family unit.

SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS Amends sec. 168-a of the Executive Law to add "Family Day" to the existing list of days of commemoration.

Justification

There is much interest today in taking the steps necessary to strengthen basic values which have been deteriorating in our society. The family unit has undergone considerable change during the past few decades, as a result ofincreased divorce and the varied Hfe styles that have emerged. To focus on the family in a positive way, and to hold the family unit in high esteem, the designation of "Family Day" could only have positive results in helping to strengthen the value of the family unit. Other states, such as Arizona and Michigan, have established recognition of "Family Day." New York State has the opportunity to continue to lead by establishing this special day in statute. The legislation will provide an excellent opportunity for New Yorkers to set aside a special day for families.
