Title of bill

An act to amend the tax law, in relation to authorizing the county of Washington to impose hotel or motel taxes

Purpose

To authorize Washington County to impose hotel or motel taxes.

Summary of provisions

Section one - adds a new section 1202-aa to authorize Washington County to adopt and amend local laws imposing a hotel or motel tax at a rate of one half of one percent, any whole percent or any combination of a whole percent and one-half of one percent; provided that such rates shall not exceed four percent

Section two - contains the effective date

Justification

This legislation has been introduced at the request of the Washington County Board of Supervisors after a recommendation of the Agriculture, Planning, Tourism and Community Development Committee. The occupancy tax would be imposed on bed and breakfasts, inns, housekeeping cottages with four or more units and tourist facilities at a rate of four percent. This definition is consistent with the state sales tax on occupancy.

The County will use the revenues generated by this tax to promote tourism in, preserve the heritage of, and celebrate the agricultural community in, Washington County.
