Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to including senior citizen students auditing community college classes in the full time equivalent state aid formula
Purpose
This bill would give funding to community colleges that have senior citizens auditing classes.
Summary of provisions
Subdivision 5 of section 6303 of the education law is amended to include senior citizen students who are auditing classes in the full time equivalent state aid formula.
Justification
Community colleges are required to permit senior citizens to audit classes if there is space available. Although seniors do not receive credit towards a degree, it is still a great learning opportunity.
The classroom interaction between college students fresh out of high school and senior citizen auditors adds a real world atmosphere that benefits everyone involved. In addition, the opportunity for seniors to continue learning helps maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.
