Title of bill
An act to amend the insurance law, in relation to third party notification of the renewal, modification, or cancellation of a senior citizen's health insurance policy
Purpose
This bill would require health insurance companies to allow its senior citizen insureds to designate a third party for notification purposes.
Summary of provisions
Section 1 of this bill amends the insurance law by relettering subsection (f) of Section 3111 as subsection (g) and adding a new subsection (f).
Existing law
Section 3111 of the NYS Insurance Law currently requires an option for third party notification in the event of cancellation or nonpayment of premiums for life, auto and homeowners insurance policies held by senior citizens. There are no provisions for third party notification for health insurance premiums that have not been paid or have been canceled.
Justification
New York's Insurance Laws currently provide important protections for senior citizens when it comes to the cancellation or nonpayment of premiums for life, auto or homeowners insurance policies. These statutes protect our elderly population in the event of misplaced premium notices, or in the event that they may not be able to handle their financial matters due to illness or other incapacitating factors.
By allowing an insured to designate a third party to receive copies of any premium notices or notices of cancellation, we can provide a vital protection to the elderly population.
