Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to transportation of certain pupils

Purpose

To provide transportation for students within a school district to a non-public school located more than fifteen miles from the home of a pupil provided that the parents reimburse the district for the incremental cost associated with the additional segment of travel.

Summary of provisions

The Board of Education may, at its discretion, provide transportation for pupils residing within the district to a non-public school located more than fifteen miles from the home of the pupil provided that the parents reimburse the district for the incremental cost associated with the pupil's residence and the fifteen-mile point shall be an ordinary contingent expense of the school district.

Justification

If the parents are willing to pay the additional cost of transporting their child to a non-public school further than the fifteen-mile limit established by the school district, the parents should have the option of sending their child to the school of choice as long as the cost differential is met.
