Title of bill

An act to amend the executive law; in relation to making the director of the state office for the aging a member of the emergency services council

Purpose or general idea of the bill

Adds the director of the state office for the aging to the emergency services council.

Summary of provisions

Amends section 580 of the executive law by adding the director of the state office for the aging to the emergency services council.

Justification

The demographics of the state and the nation are changing as the baby boomers near retirement. Older adults are primarily healthy and active but as one ages and chronic diseases occur, becoming frail is a reality for some older adults. Natural disasters, man made disasters, and other emergency situations require that the special needs of frail older adults be known and considered. Therefore, it is important to add to the list of council members the director of the state office for the aging to ensure that the special needs of older New Yorkers are considered and planned for and expertise in the area of older adults can be shared.
