Title of bill
An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in relation to allowing the use of rifles for hunting in certain towns in the county of Chautauqua; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration thereof
Purpose
To allow the use of rifles for the hunting of big game in the Towns of Charlotte east of state route sixty, Gerry east of state route sixty, Villenova, Cherry Creek, Ellington, Poland, and Carroll in Chautauqua County.
Summary of provisions
Section 11-0907 of the Environmental Conservation Law is amended to allow the Towns of Charlotte east of state route sixty, Gerry east of state route sixty, Villenova, Cherry Creek, Ellington, Poland, and Carroll in Chautauqua County to hunt big game with the use of a rifle.
Justification
In several areas of the State, sportsmen are allowed to hunt bear and deer with rifles. This change in law would allow the use of rifles in specific rural towns of Chautauqua County making it consistent with the hunting practices of adjoining Cattaraugus County. This legislation has strong support from the sportsmen community in Chautauqua. Expanding the use of hunting with rifles in Chautauqua County will also contribute to deer population control. Deer damage has been costly to the farms and agribusiness's of rural Chautauqua County.
