Title of bill
An act to amend the town law, in relation to volunteer members of the Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1
Purpose or general idea of bill
This bill would allow additional nonresident volunteers to join the Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company in order to provide necessary fire and emergency medical services.
Summary of specific provisions
This legislation amends subdivision 7 of section 176-b of the Town Law to exempt the Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1 in Nassau County from the restriction placed upon volunteer fire districts which restricts nonresidents to 45% of membership.
Justification
The Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company, No. 1 in Nassau County has consistently served the needs of the citizens and their guests with bravery and honor. Yet, time restraints and the cost of living have made it very hard to recruit Roslyn residents to join the Fire Department. It is difficult to find residents with the time to join and as a result, the department has had to turn to the surrounding communities for membership.
The Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company has already reached the New York state limit of 45% nonresident members in the department. The fire district is seeking an amendment of section 176-b of the Town Law to allow them to exceed the 45% restriction. This exemption has already been granted to numerous other fire districts in the State.
The increased membership will allow the Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Company to continue to provide necessary fire and emergency medical service.
