Title of bill

An act in relation to authorizing and directing the department of transportation to amend its five year capital plan to include the resurfacing of a certain portion of the state highway system

Purpose or general idea of bill

This bill would require the New York State Department of Transportation to including the resurfacing of Jericho Turnpike in its five year capital plan.

Summary of specific provisions

Creates an unconsolidated law requiring the New York State Department of Transportation to include the resurfacing of Jericho Turnpike, from the intersection with Herricks Road east to its intersection with Glen Cove Road, in its five year capital plan.

Justification

The New York State Department of Transportation is currently planning to repave and realign Jericho Turnpike from the NYC line to Herricks Road. They recently completed a similar project beginning at Glen Cove Road going east. It is unclear and absolutely unacceptable as to why the span of Jericho Turnpike from Herricks Road to Glen Cove Road, transversing the Village of Mineola, has been left out entirely. The DOT has a responsibility to plan for projects that make sense and do not unfairly dismiss an entire community with no apparent reasoning. The residents of the Village of Mineola and the motorists and pedestrians who use Jericho Turnpike on a daily basis deserve the same consideration as those from the immediate communities to the east and west.
