Title of bill

An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to service award programs for volunteer firefighters

Purpose

To bring certain provisions of law relating to service award programs into compliance with the age discrimination in employment act of 1967.

Summary of provisions

Amends Article 11-A of the General Municipal Law.

Justification

A series of claims filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against Fire Districts operating Service Award Programs for their volunteer firefighters under Article 11-A of the General Municipal Law alleging that the programs are in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 have created a concern that the General Municipal Law is in conflict with the applicable federal law and must be amended.

This legislation would amend Article 11-A of the General Municipal Law in order to bring the volunteer firefighter service awards programs in conformance with the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967.
