Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to authorizing a distinctive "support scouting" license plate

Purpose

This legislation would authorize a distinctive "support scouting" license plate.

Summary of provisions

Section one amends the vehicle and traffic law by adding a new section 404-x which allows any state resident to request a "support scouting" license plate, to make applications for such license plate available through the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, and to authorize the Commissioner to create and design such plate.

Section two explains the costs associated with these license plates.

Justification

Scouting has a long and treasured history in our great country and the State of New York, being formed in the early 20th century. Since that time. over one hundred million young Americans have been involved with scouting, following the guidance of volunteer scout leaders. Those leaders have instilled within these young people character development, citizenship training and personal fitness. Scouting pursues these aims through methods that are designed to be appropriate for the age and maturity of the participants.

These distinctive license plates would give members of the scouting community the opportunity to receive recognition for the good work they do, as well as promote scouting to other members of the community in which they live.
