Title of bill

An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to providing for distinctive license plates bearing the words "New York salutes the 10th Mountain Division" and to amend the state finance law, in relation to creating the 10th Mountain Division (Light) scholarship fund

Purpose or general idea of the bill

Provides for the issuance of distinctive license plates bearing the words "New York salutes the 10th Mountain Division" to residents in New York State wanting to show their support for this Division of the Army and further, creates a scholarship fund for members of the 10th Mountain Division and/or their family members.

Summary of specific provisions

Section 1. A new section 404-x, is added to the vehicle and traffic law, providing for distinctive license plates for New York State residents.

Section 2. A new section 99-t, is added to the state finance law, establishing the 10th Mountain Division (Light) scholarship fund.

Justification

When our nation is in distress on the homefront or at war abroad, the brave and dedicated soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division of the United State Army have served our country honorably and given the ultimate sacrifice in some cases. In recognition of this service, this measure will provide for a distinctive license plate saluting these men and women for their valor and letting residents show thanks, support and gratitude to them.

Further, a scholarship fund is created to provide the members of the Division and/or their family resources to continue their education. In light of the extreme hardships many of these families face, with loves one killed or wounded in action, this scholarship fund will be of great assistance to the 10th Mountain Division community. All scholarship monies will be administered through the Northern New York Community Foundation. Inc., a not-for-profit corporation.
