pURPOSE: This legislation grants peace officer statns to unifonned conrt officers employed by
the village of Northport justice court.
Summary of provisions
Section 2.10 ofthe criminal procedure law is amended by adding a new subdivision 83 to grant peace officer status to uniformed court officers for the village of Northport justice court.
Justification
The Northport Village Justice Court is the local criminal court in which all the accusatory instruments of the Northport police Department are filed. The court has regularly scheduled hours every Monday from 6:00 P.M. until the docket is complete. The court also arraigns defendants during non-traditional hours and has held jury and non-jury trials during traditional business hours. The Northport Police Department has been providing courtroom security for the Northport Village Justice Court for more than 100 years. Unfortunately, because of decreasing personnel the Department is unable to staff the court with police officers.
The Chief of Police has at his disposal, several qualified individuals who would make excellent court officers for the available part time work. All of these individuals are recently retired police officers. Because of Suffolk County Civil Service regulations they cannot maintain their police officer status working for the court, but they have the requisites to be peace officers. With appro:al of this legislation, the court can be assured of a safe and professional atmosphere during the miscellaneous hours when it is necessary to provide staff for the Court.
