Title of bill
An act to amend the executive law, in relation to powers and duties of the division of veterans' affairs
Purpose
Ensures that an existing not-for-profit cemetery will be able to access State and Federal funds through the Division of Veterans' Affairs, in order to operate and maintain a State Veterans' Cemetery.
Summary of provisions
This bill amends subdivision 12 of Section 353 of the Executive Law, adding not-for-profit cemeteries to the list of entities that can access State funds for a Veterans' Cemetery.
Justification
In 2004, the NYS Legislature passed an act that established a New York State Veterans' Cemetery Citing Committee. This Committee was formed based on the Legislature's conclusion that a need exists for State Veteran Cemeteries in New York, due to the fact that certain areas of the State are not accessible or convenient to existing National Veteran Cemeteries. This amendment would allow existing not-far-profit cemeteries to apply for funding through the State and Federal government in order to provide, manage and operate a State Veterans' Cemetery.
