Title of bill
An act to amend the tax law, in relation to extending the authorization of the county of Chemung to impose an additional one percent of sales and compensating use taxes
Purpose or general idea of bill
To authorize the Chemung County Legislature to extend their additional 1% sales tax for a 2 year period.
Summary of specific provisions
The bill amends section 1210 of the tax law to authorize the County to impose an additional 1% sales tax from the period December 1, 2009 to November 30, 2011.
Justification
The Chemung County Legislature has passed a resolution requesting that the New York State Legislature introduce and pass a bill to authorize the county to extend their existing additional 1% sales and use tax for the period December 1, 2009 through November 30, 2011. The county has determined that an increase in the real property tax would unduly burden real property owners and that a sales tax increase is the preferred method of raising revenue that the County needs to meet its increasing financial commitments. The continued tax is expected to generate an additional 11.3 million dollars in new revenue per year to be used by the County and municipalities to meet other obligations to residents.
