Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to children residing on a state university of New York

Purpose

This bill would require the state to make tuition payments to school districts where the faculty, administration and students who reside on SUNY campuses send their children to local public schools.

Summary of provisions

Section one of the bill amends §3202 of the Education Law to provide for a tuition payment by the state to school district which accepts students who are the children of faculty, administration and students who reside on SUNY campuses.

Justification

The State University attracts many fine faculty administration and nontraditional students and graduate students who have children. These children are welcomed into the local public school system around the SUNY campuses. The campuses themselves are on state-owned tax-exempt land, so parents who reside in housing on the campuses pay no school property tax. This bill will provide a tuition payment to compensate local school districts for these children.

Fiscal implications

To be determined.
