Title of bill

An act to amend the education law, in relation to the identification of pharmacists

Purpose

Requires pharmacists to wear a coat, shirt or uniform of a different color than the coats, shirts or uniforms of the other employees of the pharmacy.

Summary of provisions

Amends the education law to require pharmacists to wear a coat, shirt or uniform of a different color than the coats, shirts or uniforms of the other employees of the pharmacy.

Existing law

Currently, the only identification required to be worn by a pharmacist is a badge designed by the state board of pharmacy with his or her name on it.

Justification

Although the sight of a community pharmacist in a white coat is less common today, a certain dress code should be followed for those in this profession. Uniform clothing or a colored shirt or coat would make it easy for patients to identify the health care professional and lend them an air of authority. By wearing certain colored businesslike attire, the pharmacist may appear more approachable and helps identify them from other members of the store.
