Title of bill
An act to amend the parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation to increasing the mandatory retirement age of New York state regional park police
Purpose
Increases the mandatory retirement age for New York State Regional Park Police to sixty-five years of age.
Summary of provisions
Subdivision 4 of section 13.17 of the Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Law is amended to raise the mandatory retirement age for New York State Park Police to sixty-five years of age.
Existing law
Current law requires New York State park Police retire from service upon attaining sixty-two years of age.
Justification
People live longer and are healthier than before, and this legislation attempts to recognize that with respect to police officers. It does not change any requirement for retirement on the basis of health or for any other reason. This bill simply extends for three years the mandatory age for retirement for New York State park Police.
Legislative history
2008 Session: A.11417 - Abbate - new legislation - passed Assembly
Fiscal implications
Insofar as this will affect the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System, if this bill is enacted, there could be additional benefits for certain park police officers who remain employed beyond their current mandatory retirement age. However, if some members delay retirement due to enactment of this bill, we do not anticipate that there will be an increase in the annual contributions rates as a percentage of payroll for New York State.
Local fiscal implications
None.
Effective date
This act shall take effect immediately.
