Title of bill
An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, in relation to inspection and testing of optical scanning devices and systems
Purpose or general idea of bill
To ensure the accuracy of laser scanning equipment used to determine the price and identity of products sold at retail.
Summary of specific provisions
This bill would amend the Agriculture and Markets Law to include optical scanning equipment as a weighing and measuring device and system.
Justification
The proposed amendment would update the Agriculture and Markets Law by clearly bringing within the scope of its weights and measures provisions laser scanning equipment. This equipment scans and registers the price charged to consumers for products purchased. An error or malfunction in reading the products' scanning code could result in monetary losses to consumers (overcharging), and this bill would provide protection from such losses.
