Title of bill
An act to amend the education law, in relation to requiring adequate training in the Heimlich maneuver and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for new certification as a school teacher
Purpose/summary of provisions
This bill would amend Section 3004 of the education law by adding a new subdivision 7 requiring certification as a school teacher to include training in the Heimlich maneuver and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). As of July 1, 2005 anyone applying for teacher certification will need to have completed training in the Heimlich maneuver and CPR.
Existing law
None.
Justification
This bill would provide for the safety of the students within the state by requiring that all teachers applying for teacher certification, as of July 1, 2005, be certified in the Heimlich maneuver and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). These educators are in constant contact with children and may be needed to provide this emergency care. Their training in the Heimlich maneuver and cardiopulmonary resuscitation could save a child's life.
