Title of bill

An act to amend the insurance law, in relation to coverage for the treatment of lymphedema

Purpose

To provide insurance coverage for the special bandages and oilier specialized necessities in the treatment of lymphedema

Summary of provisions

Adds Insurance Law sections:

§3216(26) §3221(15) §4303(ff)

Existing law

Insurance companies are not consistently covering the necessary bandages, garments and other aids required in the treatment of lymphedema.

Justification

Lymphedema is an extremely painful chronic condition which occurs after surgeries such as mastectomies and if not treated properly can develop into a dangerous condition. The treatment for lymphedema requires intensive therapy. The use of specialized bandages and garments is part of the treatment and if not utilized renders the therapy useless. Some of these bandages and garments can cost up to $750.00. They are not a luxury but a necessary and vital part of the treatment.
