Title of bill

An act to authorize the United Methodist Church to file an application for a real property tax exemption

Purpose or general idea of bill

To exempt the United Methodist Church from liability for payment of real property taxes due on its parsonage located at 90 Roe Blvd., Patchogue, NY on the 2008-2009 assessment roll.

Summary of specific provisions

This bill would authorize the assessor of the Town of Brookhaven to accept an application for exemption from real property taxes as if made pursuant to section 420-a of the real property tax law for the assessment roll as completed in taxable year 2008-2009. When satisfied that the United Methodist Church of Patchogue would otherwise have been entitled to said exemption, the assessor is authorized and directed to grant same, refund the appropriate pro rata portion of any taxes paid and cancel all remaining unpaid taxes, related fines and penalties.

Justification

The United Methodist Church, located in Patchogue, a not-for-profit organization, failed to file a renewal application for a real property tax exemption on its parsonage located at 90 Roe Blvd., Patchogue, NY in timely manner.
